the uses of like

 

n her hit single, "Someone like you"  Adele sings of a meeting with her ex-lover who is now "married and settled down" (sposato e sistemato). She is still in love with him - "for me it isn't over" (per me non è finito) - but she accepts the situation - "Never mind, I'll find someone like you"
In this example like is used as a preposition to express similarity - a person similar to you....
Like  can also be used to make a comparison, or give examples:
Jennifer looks very like her sister.
I prefer to eat healthy foods, like fruit and cereals.
What is the weather like?
Remember when we are talking about jobs we say "She works as a teacher".
Like is also commonly used as a verb to express preferences or enjoyment or habits
I like dancing and swimming (preference)
He likes to read before he goes to bed (habit)
Did you like the film? (enjoyment)
Do not confuse this with "would like to" which is a polite way of saying "want to"
I would like to have dinner with you.
Would you like to eat out this evening?
