"get" meaning "become"

As you get older three things happen – the first is your memory goes – and I can’t remember the other two.

Sir Norman Wisdom

The verb "get" is commonly used with an adjective to mean "become", especially in informal or spoken English - it always suggests an evolution

e.g.     She is prepared to do anything to get rich             (E' pronta a fare qualsiasi cosa per arricchirsi)

If you want to get thinner you have to exercise       (Sei vuoi dimagrire devi fare del moto)

It is frequently used to describe a change in status or state, and often translates a reflexive verb in Italian:

to get married - sposarsi

also: to get washed (lavarsi), to get dressed (vestirsi), to get angry (arrabbiarsi) and

to get ready (preparasi)
