If something is really great we say it's the best thing since sliced bread.

A little history

Sliced bread was first sold commercially in the US in 1928 and marketed with the slogan "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped."

The most popular brand in the US was called "Wonderbread" - something to get really excited about - and was sold nationwide after 1930. However, for a short time agter the entry of the US into World War II a ban was put on the sale of sliced bread as a conservation measure to reduce packaging and consumption.

The enthusiasm for sliced bread quickly spread to the UK and at one time 80% of all bread bought was "sliced bread"., but now home-baking, community baking and small bakeries are making a comeback.
